Austin earned a Phd in political science at UCI and taught college for several years. He was married three or four times and traveled extensively throughout his lifetime and to all parts of the world. From a young age (20 or 21) he became deeply involved in the Hari Krisna movement and held several important positions in that organization. He excelled at most sports that he tried, especially snow skiing and tennis. He loved surfing too. His true love however, was golfing. He was very good at it. He and I once embarked on a world wide expedition with the sole purpose of playing golf every day and every place that we could. I could never beat him because I was never in his league but he was kind enough to never rub that fact in except with good natured humor. He taught me almost everything I know about the game. His patience was extraordinary. He was a great longtime friend of mine. I could always count on him for thoughtful conversation and opinions. Mostly however, I will always remember him because he gave me a lifetime of laughter. Life would have been much less interesting had I never known him.
