Carol Schnitger, a singer, music educator, author, equestrian, backpacker, animal lover and 88-year resident of Garden Grove, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 15, 2020. She was 93. Carol was born on February 3, 1927 to Irvine & Winifred (Adland) German in Garden Grove. Since there was no hospital in town, Winifred gave birth in Dr. CC Violette’s office. Carol grew up in a musical household, continuing her parents’ tradition by playing the piano, as well as the baritone horn. Carol attended Garden Grove High School, where her father taught music. As a senior, she was student body Vice President, sang with the glee club, and performed in theatre. Upon graduation in 1944, this Renaissance woman was awarded Girl’s Athlete of the Year. Then, so that she could stay in town to raise her new filly while also attending Santa Ana College, Carol worked in the orange packing house. She went on to earn her Bachelor degree at the University of Southern California, and remained a lifelong Trojan fan. see full obituary for more

Kathy Blankenship (Powers) (1971)

Oh my gosh!  I had no idea that this wonderful lady was still going at 93; and had I known, I would have been in touch.  I was in kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary School in 1958 and I had "Mrs. Snickers" (as we all called her) as my lovely teacher.  The whole class thought it was wonderful fun to have a "Snickers Bar" for a teacher.  We truly could not say the name "Schnitger" properly (saying the "h" and "n" together were so hard) and we really believed it was pronounced the same as the candy bar.

I clearly remember her to this day and what a wonderful time we had at school.  She was so kind, gentle and sweet to a 5 year old that loved going to school.  Some of the most impressionable memories in my life were created in her class -- prior to kindergarten my world consisted of my home, back yard and some front yard time.  Kindergarten really blew my socks off and she was kindness personified.

I still have a photo of her standing with me outside of the kindergarten class that my mother took. That is one teacher I would have loved to touch bases with in my old age!
