Kortz, Horst S. passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017. He was born December 23, 1933 in Duisburg, West Germany to Luise and Wilhelm Kortz. After serving a tool and die apprenticeship, he came to the U.S.A. in 1952 and settled in Detroit, Michigan. He married Carol Bartlett in December 1958. They moved to Southern California in 1959, eventually settling in Mission Viejo in 1970. He graduated from UCLA with degrees in Chemistry, Physics, and Math, then proceeded to teach chemistry and physics at Garden Grove High School for 33 years. He loved teaching and loved his students. Horst loved all watersports. He spent many years sailing and racing with his wife and sons and became one of the most successful skippers to race out of Long Beach. Upon retirement in 1997 he and Carol spent much of their time at Catalina on their boat. Their love of cruising took them to many parts of the world. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carol; his two sons and their wives; and four wonderful grandsons.
