Many of us remember Bob Suess as a great Track & Field Coach at GGHS.  Few knew that Coach Suess was an outstanding track performer in his own right.  As a junior at Huntington Beach High School in 1951 he was the CIF Southern Section champion in the 880-yd run and finished 5th in the CIF State meet.  As a senior, he placed second and 4th, respectively,  in those same events.  He also drove a really cool Corvette while he taught GGHS!

Robert Lyon (1969)

Hi,     My name is Bob Lyon. Class of 1969. In 1965-1966, I was enrolled in Mr. Suess math class. He was tall, tan and very, very, fit. Funny and soft spoken. I was just getting interested in the beach lifestyle, when I met Mr. Suess. He had in his room a "Surf Chart" that was so COOL! Every day He would move the little surfer icon  up and down, depending on the swell and size of the surf. He inspired me to become a wave rider! And, after 45 years, I am STILL catching waves! Thank you Mr. Suess for your kind words and encouragement!!   Bob Lyon   :-)

When we were young ,we often didn't see teachers as "real people" as they were so much older than we were.  Hanging out at Huntington Beach Pier, belly boarding and body surfing, I would sometimes see Coach Suess riding waves. Although I didn't ever have him as a coach or teacher, and had no reason to believe he would know me, I had to notice just how good he was in the water. He was extremely good body surfing, riding waves that broke way past the Bait Shop, right next to the pier, and doing it as good if not better than most of the other wave-riders in the water. I was pretty much a grom, but sure was encouraged to get better watching the "old guy" tear it up at "the pier"   A great memory of Coach Suess  Kent r

Al Siddons (1969)

Al Siddons ,Mr . Suess was our coach and we had some great teams and indivduals. Mike Davis was our star and he has also passed. Later Mr . Suess had State Champions in Tony Kryzociak and Mark Schilling. .Maybe some of you can help us out with some of the other great athletes in other events. I know we had some great throwers , high jumpers , pole vaulters etc. He was definitely MR COOL.
