William F. Smith VIEW PROFILE

William F. Smith

Mr. Smith passed away on December 16, 2009. He was 87.  He was a WWII Army Medical Corps veteran and taught at Garden Grove High School for 41 years.

A former student remembers Mr Smith:

I was a '77 Graduate also Argo of the Year in Track that same year. I wanted to say a belated good bye to Herr Smith. To this day I am always saying things in German ! I spent 3 years in his Class and have the best memories of Grove there. I can still see that sign in his Class room and I still say it to this day, "To err is human to forgive devine"! Rest in Peace Herr Smith .

Guten tag Luisa, wie geht's?
Danke gut, und dir?
Prima!
und so weiter (and so on)........

Had Herr Schmidt (Mr. Smith) for 4 years of German and 44 years later still remember the first dialog we learned in freshman German.

Have a lot of fond memories of being in his classes.

Auf wiedersehen Herr Schmidt!

Paul, I only had 3 years of German with Herr Smith, but they were memorable years. I had wonderful opportunities to use and enhance my German by living there for 2 years post high school.

News of Mr. Smith's passing is a bit difficult for me. It's amazing he was at GGHS for 41 years!

You are missed, Mr. Smith.

Gute tag Luisa, Indeed! What an understatement to a man that meant so much to us all. Aloha, Herr Schmit, Herr Henkel

Jeez, I was President (Fuhrer) of the German Club (but only a puppet of Rick Rosenquist, I'm not too proud to add...), and can hardly speak a word of German now! (My Japanese isn't bad now, though.) I too fondly remember Herr Shmidt, his hand signals for individuals to repeat or answer, and for the whole class to repeat or answer. He was indeed an excellent teacher. Actually I did visit Germany and Austria before I had forgotten most of what I learned, and it helped me a lot at that time.

Heil Hitler! Ha, ha, ha! The German Club was a lot of silly fun!
