Jules Domond VIEW PROFILE

Jules Domond

Jules Domond taught French at GGHS in the late 60's and early 70's.  After he left Garden Grove High, he had a career in sales for a chemical company.  His courtly manners and respect for everyone he encountered no doubt stood him in good stead.

But the years before he came to Grove were - to most of the student body - a mystery.

Then the Argolog did a center-spread, photo-illustrated expose' of the man in his previous life as a diplomat from the Republic of Haiti.  We all saw the pictures of the procession of horse-drawn carriages when he was received at Court as the Ambassador to France.

I came across this photo (dated August 14, 1949) when I was searching for any of those images the Argolog used.  It shows a younger Jules Domond, early in his diplomatic career, at a special signing ceremony (Authorizing Federal participation in the Bi-Centennial Celebration of the founding of Port Au Prince).  Monsieur Domond was, at the time, 38 years of age and the Commercial Attache to the Haitian Embassy in Washington DC.  The man seated with the pen in his hand is, of course, the President of the United States - Harry Truman.  Rene Coliman - another Haitian Embassy official - is standing to the left  and Melvin D. Hildreth - National Chair of the Democratic Party is standing next to our French teacher!  No one in This photo probably said "Puis j'allez boire un peu d'eau?" or ever needed to be lectured about courtesy to the class!

Jules Domond passed away September 28, 2009 in Fountain Valley, CA.  He was born in Port Au Prince, Haiti on April 13, 1911 and he filled his 98 plus years on this Earth with life experiences in more rarified air than most of us have ever dreamed of breathing.
